On a beautiful Saturday in May, Kegs Softball Club headed to Castleknock College for the Niall Melon Blitz, a charity tournament held in support of the fantastic Melon Educate organisation. It was a fitting way to kick off the 2026 season, and the day exceeded every expectation.
We split our members across two sides, KCB Buzzballs and KCB Buckfasts, for a brilliant day of softball. Between them, our two squads played 10 games in total, with the Buckfasts picking up two wins and the Buzzballs claiming one. By any measure, it was a strong showing for the first blitz of the year.
The standard of play was genuinely impressive right from the off. Both teams grew in confidence throughout the day, the cobwebs of the off-season quickly forgotten as the softball instincts kicked back in. It was particularly heartening to welcome several new players into Kegs colours, all of whom threw themselves into the spirit of the day and fitted in seamlessly. That easy sense of togetherness is something this club has always done well, and Saturday was no different.
To round the competitive games off, we played an interclub friendly that was enormous fun, full of energy and great moments. Then came arguably the best part of the day: pints with the other teams afterwards. There is nothing quite like a well-earned drink in good company, and the post-match socialising was a wonderful way to bring everyone together and celebrate a memorable occasion.
A massive thank you to André and Katie for coaching the teams so brilliantly, and a very special mention to Drew for organising the whole event. It was a seamlessly run day and a real credit to everyone involved.
Raising funds for Melon Educate gave the day a meaning beyond the scoreboard, and it is something the whole club can feel proud of. At Kegs, we believe that fairness, fun, and community come first, and the Niall Melon Blitz captured all three perfectly. Here is to a fantastic 2026 season ahead.
